Custom Oak mirror frame with shelf, designed, built and finished on the job. Custom stain to match vanity.
(Pay no attention to the the wizard behind the curtain...)

Onyx Collection custom size double bowl vanity top, with Ogee Edge design with customer's choice ceramic tile backsplash surround.

New Countertops and Custom Slide-out Drawers

We used 9-ply 3/4 thick AC plywood for the bottom, and 3/4 x 8 Ponderosa Pine for the two sides and the back, and 3/4 Red Oak solid lumber for the front of these custom-fit sliding drawers. (We figured overkill is a good thing for a pots n' pans drawer) We glued and screwed the drawer box together, and used 100 lb full-extension ball bearing heavy-duty slides! This is one tough, smooth working drawer system. Stain and finish were comparable to shade of cabinets, as you can see. Our customer loved them!

We duplicated two more slide-out drawers on the other end of this cabinet!

Here is the cabinet section that we put the slide-out drawers in, and new counter tops on. The counter top is the 180 degree flat rolled edge design, and really looks nice! The rolled edge is covered underneath all the way to the cabinet front, so that cleaning is made easy. A lot of laminate tops have exposed wood underneath the edge, and can get contaminated very easily over time. A small detail that makes a difference.

Countertop installation details make all the difference. Here you can see the caulk bead that we did between the ceramic tile and the new countertop. We use a custom color caulk that we purchase at Integrity Interiors that we use in all ceramic tile installations that we do. It is especially formulated to use with ceramic tile and works great with laminate. It does not discolor and turn ugly like most caulk does. We also use blue tape on either side of the caulk line, tool the caulk, and then quickly remove tape to make a perfect caulk bead. It looks like trim more than it does caulk. You can do this easily yourself. It does take more time, but it is worth it, as you can see.

Details really make a difference, don't you agree?

The old countertop in this project was made on the job. Plywood was glued and nailed to the top of the base cabinets. A 1x2 was then nailed to the edge of the top of the cabinet and the edge of the plywood. Plastic laminate was then glued to the edge band of 1x2 and then to the top surface of plywood. I have done many custom installations this exact same way. However, what this means is that you must cut the top off of the base cabinets, when you remove the old top, and install a new one. The old top has to come off in pieces. Now, when you place the new counter-top on the base cabinets, the new top is going to be 3/4 of an inch higher than the old tops were, and you will have a 3/4 band of raw wood showing. (Yes, there are other methods, we just liked this one for this particular project)

We custom matched the stain, and adjusted the height of the dishwasher so that everything looks like an original installation. It turned out real nice, as you can see. The 180 degree edge on the top makes the entire top look more like solid stone than a laminate top. I really like how this edge makes the top look!

The Kohler cast iron sink looks real nice in this kitchen, as does the new faucet we installed. During the re-plumbing, we installed new stops, and a new dishwasher drain, and other refinements to bring this kitchen up to standards. Our customer picked out a beautiful pattern of laminate!

UTILTY/BATH REMODEL

Remodel of Utility Room/half bath to Full Size Bathroom w/utility area. As you see, this Customer has wonderful interior decorating talent!

Nickel Silver frame with "Rain glass" design glass door and fixed panel. This is a 4 ft. wide shower, and the custom swinging door is nice and wide for entry/exit. Solid construction, no "wiggling" of frame when door is opened or shut. Interior of glass door and panel is smooth for easy cleaning. Special drip gutter on bottom of door channels water to interior of shower when the door is open. Magnetic latch works real nice. Pebblestone Glass of Adrian, Missouri sold and installed the shower door. Very professional job. CLICK HERE to go to their Website.

Here you can see the "Frameless" design of the shower door, and the drip channel/gutter on the bottom of the door, as well as the beautiful design of the glass.

We installed a Delta slidebar hand shower chosen by our customer. The Delta model 54713-SS hand shower incorporates a three-function spray, a 24 inch slide bar, and a 69 inch hose. This model comes in 5 finishes. Our customer chose the "Brilliance Stainless" finish. We also installed the optional wall elbow in matching finish. This hand shower is pressure balanced, with scald control, and carries a lifetime warranty from Delta. CLICK HERE to go to Delta's Website.

Lasco showers are some of the best we have installed. This is a 48 inch wide unit, with built-in seat, as you can see. You can get the seat on either side, and a "tile look" wall is available, as well. The built-in grab bar is very solid, and Lasco re-inforces the shower door jamb area, so that everything will be extra solid when door is installed. The non-slip bottom makes it un-necessary to put in bath mats. Down the road, should anything happen, the quality of the construction will allow repairs to be made, unlike most manufacturer's products! The attachement flange is nice and wide for a solid installation. We always install tubs and showers in mortar, so that the tub bottom or shower base is as solid as it can get. When was the last time you stepped in a tub or shower, and it felt like a trampoline? (This is not good.) The simple and easy step of setting showers and tubs in mortar has been a standard of the industry for a LONG time. Details make the difference! CLICK HERE to go to Lasco's Website.

Custom 18 inch deep storage shelves above the washer and dryer, with custom doors and face frame finished to match vanity and linen cabinet.

We relocated the stool in this remodel, so that it would be between the vanity and the linen cabinet, with room for a small wastebasket, and easy access to adjacent paper holder. This kind of planning is extremely important in bathroom design. We take the time to discuss layout with customers, and consider their ideas and input into all phases of remodeling. This involves plumbing, electrical, and framing descisions that have to be made at the beginning of the job, to avoid costly changes or delays later on, in the project. This customer was the best in letting us know what was expected...we really liked that!

View of inside the custom cabinet above the washer and dryer. Everything finished inside and out. Clearance space above shelves was completed according to customer needs.

Here you can see the washer/dryer box located for handy access. Electrical, drain, and water supply are all located here, with bottom of box draining into washer drain, should you release any water when hooking/unhooking water supply hoses...a small detail, yes, but it is nice.
On the left, you see an access door to the shower valve. This is real handy if you have to change out the valve later on, or for troubleshooting. The cover can be painted if you desire. The plastic frame and door are inexpensive and work real well.

Customer has a window valance and curtain for the window, just didn't have installed before I took this picture. Just can't say enough about the talent this lady has for decorating...everything we did as a team just makes this new addition go with the rest of her home the best. When you go in this area, everything looks like it belongs there, and was built with the home originally!

Originally, the door to this area swung into the room. This used up a lot of space, and also would block access to the linen cabinet, if the door was not closed first. The perfect solution was a pocket door. Out of the way, but still allows for privacy when needed, with a privacy lockset installed on the door. There are many solutions available for problem areas in a remodel, and they come in real handy!

Wrought Iron accessories, textured to look like wood, along with other accessories make a classic statement!
This home has hot water baseboard heat, and we added a baseboard unit in the expanded area, as you can see, to help warm the room, and the towels above. The supply/return copper piping below the floor will also help warm the floor area that you step out of the shower onto, giving an extra bonus to the added unit, making a warm and cozy room.

Moisture control is important in every bathroom, especially so, when you have a shower. This one is a nice quiet fan to accomplish just that purpose. David, of Cameron Electric, supplied and installed this fan that works great, as well as taking care of all electrical needs for this project.

The "Thousand-word" picture.

Cameron Electric also supplied and installed a UL approved light for wet areas above the shower. A nice additon to any shower area!

AN EXTENSIVE KITCHEN/BATHROOM/OFFICE AREA REMODEL

More and more homeowners are installing hardwood flooring in the kitchen. With a placement of throw rugs in front of the sink area, and other places where you might have moisture or spills, you can control damage. Hardwood does not take water well, and is prone to denting or scratching, because that is what happens to wood. Laminate flooring, that is designed to look like hardwood, does not take water well in the joints. However, with this in mind, and with care you can get many years out of these floors.
In this job, we put 3/4 x 2-1/4 inch prefinished oak hardwood in the kitchen, living room and adjoining office area. Included in the work was joist/floor repair of former remodeling efforts. In adding rooms to the home, the floor level was uneven where new and old floor met. In addition, new floor was not strong enough for hardwood, so a beam and new subfloor was called for. We wound up removing all the subfloor, down to the floor joists, and laying down new plywood subfloor, and hardwood on top of that. While this was a drastic measure, the end result was a flat floor, with all door sills at the proper level. The new hardwood floor appears to be an original installation, instead of an obvious add-on because of higher floor level at doorways.

When we exposed the original 1x8 lap joint subfloor, it was obvious it was a very poor grade of wood, and had warped and gotten much worse over the years. We installed 3/4 x 4x8 T&G sturdi-floor plywood on the floor joists, leveling floor as we could, and installed the hardwood on top of that. Yes, we left the cabinets in place. Special saw cuts under the toekick to accomplish this, as well as flush cuts floor to the bottom of wall plate. Special power jamb saw makes all the cuts at doorways and other places.

End result of all that work was well worth it!

Homeowner wanted to save the tub, and the vanity cabinet. She has had the tub refinished, and liked the size of the vanity, except for the top. Cabinets above were in good shape, and we left them also. She did not like the color of the wall tile, because it limited the color choices in redecorating. She chose 8x8 white wall tile which worked great. We refurbished the tub faucet with handles and extensions, for an "original" look. We replaced the tub drain and overflow.
Originally, the vanity had ceramic tile part way up from the front of tub, and we suggested rebuilding that section, so we could tile all of the vanity front at the front of tub. This was a small change, but made a BIG difference. (See after photos below...)
Vinyl floor was removed, as well as previous flooring, down to the original subfloor. We then installed ceramic tile on concrete backer board, with new stool and new floor trim. As we normally do, we used matching sanded caulk around perimeter of floor, and at the tub, so that caulk and grout match. Details make all the difference!
Homeowner re-painted cabinets, ceiling and walls, and did a terrific job! Very neat application, and the color scheme with paint, and tile looks like a page right out of House and Garden magazine...no kidding!

This top is GUARANTEED FOREVER! I am not making this up. These tops are simply the BEST, bar none. Once you see the quality, and the options available, you will want one. Full Line Lumber has one on display, and can order them for you, and we can install them. Check out the manufacturer's website:

The mess and time was well worth it. Years down the road, cost will have been forgotten for the enjoyment and benefits of quality remodeling. You can count on it. Quality bath and kitchen remodeling ADDS to the value of your home...

Custom built-in shelving with secretary desk were all part of this kitchen remodel. One side of kitchen was enlarged to make room for kitchen table, and built in shelves. Off to side, a wall bracket was used to set TV on for morning coffee, news, and weather. Very well thought out remodel by ingenious homeowners. Some of the nicest people I have worked with. Lots of thought went into this project, with the desired result for them.

Secretary Kitchen Desk

We installed tumbled marble on backsplash of new kitchen remodel, that included custom granite tops. WOW! The tumbled marble looked great...customer picked out a great color to go with the granite. Interior decorator suggested using the tumbled marble on the desk in the kitchen. We installed special bull nose trim on the edge of the desk, and matched the grout lines of the backsplash marble to the desk back, as you can see in the picture. Each piece of curved wall trim was hand cut and finished to accomplish interior decorators design.

Here is a 4 foot wide shower that replaced an old fiberglas one piece unit. We framed and finished walls and ceiling. The old shower was narrower because of it's design, and homeowners really liked this improvement.

We removed a base cabinet in this remodel, and added a dishwasher. A custom made base cabinet was installed to finish the base cabinet run. The material of the custom cabinet, as well as the design and stain and finish had to match perfectly, and it did. Look below at "Kitchen After picture". New tops completed the fresh, updated look in the beautiful kitchen.

KITCHEN BEFORE

This kitchen is tired. Several door panels and drawer fronts do not look like the rest of the cabinets. The finish is old and needs lots of help. The hardware is dated. Overall, the kitchen cabinets are clean and well taken care of, but appearance is just not the best. The "Boxes" are structually sound, however, and the interiors look very good, and shelves are all in good shape. The face frames are not damaged, and ends of cabinets that show are in good shape, even though needing refinished. This kitchen is a PERFECT EXAMPLE for new doors and drawer fronts. And that is what we did. Look at next picture!

KITCHEN AFTER

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! After installing new solid oak cabinet doors, and solid oak drawer fronts, stripping the old stain and finish from the face frames, and ends of cabinets that you could see, we re-stained (lighter), and applied the best finish on the market. It is a very low-odor, extremely fast dry finish. As a matter-of-fact, I applied 2 sealer coats and 3 finish coats on all new doors and drawer fronts in one day! I am not making that up. Doors and drawer fronts were installed the next day...call for details. We saved this customer THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, and on top of that, customized her kitchen the way she wanted at the same time.

Installing ceramic, porcelain, slate or stone tile is a very popular option right now in bathrooms and in kitchens. The patterns and styles are almost endless, and trims are plentiful. Integrity Interiors has the best selection in this area of wall and floor tile. Be sure to check them out when planning your remodel. If you are wanting quality craftmanship, creative design, and particular workmanship, give me a call.

Here is a picture of a bathroom before we remodeled not only the bath, but a large portion of the rest of the home. Homeowner and interior decorator designed new bathroom, and WOW, does it look terrific...check pics below.

Homeowner wanted to save vintage cast iron tub, which was in really good condition. No refinishing was necessary. Choice of colors of tile, grout, wallcovering, and new fixtures made this bath a standout.

We salvaged a wood porch column to make the half columns in this bath. Custom base and top add the finishing touch. Picture does not do this bath justice. This homeowner was not only one of the best to work for, but had impeccable taste, as you can see.

Who says you can't have your jacuzzi in your bedroom? Luckily the floor was constructed with floor joists 12 inches on center, and strong enough to hold the weight of this unit. Ceramic tile floor was laid out in a traffic pattern that works great with the patio door, and adjoining walk-in closet. New window was positioned just right for a million dollar view of the beautiful wooded area behind the house, while soaking the stress of the day away.

The vanity cabinet was the only thing salvaged in the complete bathroom remodel. New top with end splash was installed, as well as new hardware throughout. Floor, walls, ceiling all redone, as well as bringing electrical and plumbing up to speed. Windows are always a problem in a shower area. We used a vinyl window, and a matching acrylic window trim kit, to make the window area almost waterproof. We take a lot of windows out of the new shower area in remodels, however, you do not have to...there are ways of working around them!

In a previous remodel, a wall was removed in the new kitchen area. Not much thought was given to finishing the ceiling. Over the years, it became a difficult task (and expensive) to make the kitchen ceiling smooth in that area. This faux beam worked perfectly in the design of the kitchen, with new trim and additon of new oak flooring extending the old oak flooring. Lots of hardwood floor was sanded and re-finished here, and what a deluxe job it was...you cannot hardly tell where the old and new meet. The wood beam looks like part of the design for the kitchen, instead of a "fix".

New tub, and fiberglass walls really updated this bathroom. Here is another window in the shower...vinyl window, PVC trim, and a trex sill, all weatherproofed for an almost waterproof installation. Removal of the window in this instance was out of the question. Creative solutions in remodeling make a house a home.

When I first saw the color of the walls, I didn't know what to think. After the project was done, and all painting completed, I really liked it. Don't be afraid to use bold colors, here is an example of one that looks great! Note the grab bars on the shower walls...blocking was added behind inside the wall, so that you can stand and jump up and down on these...safety should be of the utmost concern in remodeling.

Another use of bold color, border, and paint. Who says that pastel colors are the best? Not me, anymore.

If you have the space, an island in your new kitchen works out great. If you already have one, as this customer did, we can put a new top on it. The patterns and colors of tops are beautiful! The rage now is for stone or ceramic on tops...but do not overlook the laminate tops when you design your new kitchen. Some of the colors of laminate go clear through the material, and the edge treatments have came light years from the old curved edges....be sure to check them out. Full Line Lumber in Clinton has a good selection of samples for you to look at.

Here is a deck detail for the Jacuzzi in the bedroom picture above. Stainless steel brushed finish trim was used for what would be sharp edges if only tile was used for this deck. It is specifically designed for ceramic tile, and comes in many finishes and colors. With these products you get a better tile job. We used a "hidden" magnetic latch system for access to the pump, drain, and electric under the Jacuzzi in this remodel.

Here is a brand new Pella Swingset Patio Door, installed from kitchen to deck. Doors come in all configurations, colors, grid designs, etc. We install a lot of patio doors and windows, and always follow the manufacturer's requirements for warranties. If you need a door or window, call me.

I have to admit, it is hard to beat real stone. Granite tops, tumbled marble backsplash.....wow.

A small detail that makes all the difference in a quality remodel. New 5 foot shower was not as deep as old shower area, even though it has much more room in it than the old one. Customer did not really need new carpet, so we found a few pieces of porcelain floor tile that looked real nice with the color of carpet, installed them, and killed two birds with one shot. Tile will take what moisture comes out of shower when exiting, and it looks good, too! Success is in the details.

Kohler cast iron sink. Delta kitchen faucet. New tops. Doesn't get much better than this.

St. Marys vanity tops come in so many different designs and flavors, you will not believe it. They are quality, period. The end splashes always match, perfectly, and a lot of other details really make the difference. Check with Full Line Lumber in Clinton, you won't be sorry.

Customer wanted to use masonite bathboard, with ceramic tile trim in this remodel. It actually turned out better than I thought. Ceramic tile floor, new medicine cabinet and light, border, matching curtain, paint all worked together to make this bath look really nice on a budget.

Whirlpool tub and new fiberglas shower walls replaced a really old one piece fiberglass avocado green unit. I had to frame in ceiling and wall area to take the new tub and walls. Matching everything to existing sheetrock, floor and ceiling is always interesting in remodels. Customer loved this one.
